A Pillow Fit For a Wedding
While I have been busy doing the hard work of getting my business ready to go I was almost relieved to get a commission for a very special occasion. Whenever I get a chance to work with someone to create a very personalized gift I am more of a sponge, just listening to what it is they are looking for. Once I hear their ideas, I will tailor questions to help them really hone in the idea. It could be things like what colors, materials, inspirations. I use all of the information to then come up with an tangible product that is a one of a kind, piece of custom art. During this process I have to find inspiration for myself as well. I will draw on images, fonts, colors, photos, and anything that just gets my creativity flowing.
In this case I was commissioned to create a wedding ring pillow. This was for a vintage 1930’s Hollywood themed wedding. It was even going to take place in a classic vintage theater. Once I did some research I was lead to the style of the old hats. I found a great millinery supplier and ordered some classic veiling. Due to the fact that it was an elegant event I chose to work with classic timeless fabrics and rely on clean simplicity. The pillow was created with a cream colored silk and I used a delicate silk ribbon to tie the rings to the pillow. I am fortunate enough to live within access of some great antique stores and I was able to take the creation one step further and include a pearl and crystal broach as the centerpiece. I hand stitched some of the millinery veil across the center of the pillow and the look was complete.
The next personal touch (which was a surprise for the couple) was to hand embroider their names and wedding date on the back of the pillow. I went with a classic ornate font and used a chain stitch to have a continuous flow. The pillow worked out great for the happy couple and I hear they even keep it on their couch now. It means so much to create custom items for people. Collaboration keeps things fresh and exciting and leads you down paths you might not have otherwise walked.
